Why is my VELUX window making a whistling noise?
A roof window that starts whistling when the wind picks up may have an issue with airflow, seals, closing pressure or another part of the window or installation. The sound can sometimes help point towards the cause.
A VELUX window that whistles, hums or produces a high-pitched noise when it is windy can be surprisingly irritating. More importantly, if the noise is new, it can indicate that air is moving through or around the roof window differently from before.
That does not automatically mean the window has failed. Roof windows incorporate ventilation features, and wind conditions around a roof can produce noticeable airflow. However, a persistent whistle accompanied by a draught, difficulty closing the window or other changes deserves closer attention.
What causes a VELUX window to whistle?
Whistling is created when air moves quickly through a relatively small gap or opening. It is similar to the principle behind the sound produced when blowing across a narrow opening.
Around a roof window, there are several places where airflow could potentially create this effect.
Possible causes include:
- airflow through the window's ventilation system
- worn or deteriorated seals
- a sash that is not closing evenly
- an operating or locking mechanism that needs attention
- gaps associated with the installation
- age-related deterioration
- unusually strong wind pressure around the roof
The timing of the noise is useful information
If the whistle only occurs during strong winds from one particular direction, that tells us something different from a window that whistles during relatively light wind and also feels noticeably draughty.
Is some airflow through a VELUX window normal?
VELUX roof windows are designed with ventilation in mind, and some models incorporate a ventilation flap or control bar that allows fresh air into the room while the window remains closed.
This means feeling or hearing some airflow does not automatically indicate a defective window.
What matters is whether the behaviour is normal for that particular window or whether something has changed.
It is worth investigating when:
- the whistling has only recently started
- the noise has become significantly louder
- you can feel a strong draught with the window fully closed
- the window has become difficult to close
- the sash appears uneven in the frame
- you have also noticed leaks or condensation
Could the window seals be causing the whistle?
Potentially. Seals help control the movement of air and water around a closed roof window. Like many components, they can deteriorate over time.
If a seal has become compressed, damaged, displaced or degraded, air may find a path through a narrow area and create a noticeable noise in windy conditions.
The presence of a whistle alone is not enough to diagnose a failed seal, however. The complete window should be considered rather than replacing parts based purely on the sound.
What are the signs of a draughty VELUX window?
A draught and a whistle often appear together, but they are not exactly the same thing. You may hear airflow without experiencing a significant cold draught inside the room.
Whistling only
The sound may be associated with wind moving through the ventilation system or a very small opening that becomes noticeable under particular wind conditions.
Whistling and cold air
A noticeable draught while the window is properly closed gives more reason to investigate seals, closing pressure, alignment or the wider installation.
Other signs can include:
- a cold sensation around the closed sash
- movement of curtains or blinds near the window
- one area feeling noticeably colder than another
- increased noise from outside
- difficulty achieving a secure closed position
Could the VELUX window simply not be closing properly?
Yes. If the sash does not close into its normal position, even a relatively small gap can allow wind to pass through.
The reason might involve the operating mechanism, hinges, alignment or another component rather than the weather seal itself.
Pay attention to whether the window feels different when you close it. A change in the amount of force required, an unusual movement or a handle or control bar that no longer reaches its normal position can all be useful clues.
If the operating mechanism has also changed, our guides to a stiff VELUX window and a VELUX window that will not stay open may also be useful.
Can the ventilation flap make a noise?
Because ventilation involves controlled airflow, wind conditions can sometimes make air movement more noticeable around the ventilation area.
The important distinction is between normal operation and a new problem. If the same window has been installed for years without making a particular noise and suddenly starts whistling regularly, it is reasonable to ask what has changed.
Do not permanently block the ventilation system
It may be tempting to seal every apparent source of airflow with tape, silicone or another material. Avoid permanently blocking ventilation features or applying sealant around the window without first identifying where the air is actually coming from.
Could poor installation cause a whistling roof window?
The performance of a roof window depends on more than the window unit itself. It forms part of a complete installation involving the roof opening, flashing, insulation and surrounding construction.
If unwanted air is entering around the installation rather than through the window itself, simply changing a window seal may not address the real problem.
This is why diagnosing roof window problems remotely from a single symptom can be difficult. A draught may be felt near the window even though the route taken by the air begins elsewhere.
Does a whistling VELUX window mean it is leaking?
Not necessarily. Air leakage and water ingress are different problems, although deterioration or installation issues can sometimes produce more than one symptom.
A window can whistle without allowing rainwater into the property, and a leaking roof window does not necessarily whistle.
If you have seen water as well as hearing wind noise, the source should be investigated rather than assuming the water is simply coming through the same gap.
Our guide to VELUX window condensation or leaks explains how several common moisture problems can be confused with one another.
Can condensation be connected to draughts?
Condensation is primarily associated with moisture in the indoor air meeting a sufficiently cold surface. A draught does not automatically cause condensation.
However, poor thermal performance, cold areas around a window and ventilation behaviour can all affect conditions around a roof window, so homeowners may notice several symptoms at the same time.
If moisture is the main problem, read our guide on how to reduce condensation on VELUX windows.
Can I find the source of the whistle myself?
You can make some useful observations without dismantling the window or climbing onto the roof.
When the noise occurs, note:
- whether the window is completely closed
- whether the ventilation flap is open or closed
- where the sound appears loudest
- whether you can also feel a draught
- how strong the wind is outside
- whether the noise changes with wind direction
- whether the window is difficult to open or close
These observations can make diagnosis much easier.
Avoid removing components, leaning out of the roof window or accessing the external roof simply to locate the sound.
Should I use silicone around a draughty VELUX window?
Not as a general fix. Applying silicone or another sealant without knowing where the unwanted airflow originates can conceal the symptom without correcting the cause.
It may also interfere with drainage, ventilation or components designed to move.
A proper repair starts with identifying whether the issue is associated with a seal, the window mechanism, installation or another part of the surrounding roof.
Can a whistling VELUX window be repaired?
Often, the underlying cause can be addressed. What that repair involves depends entirely on what is producing the airflow.
Maintenance or repair
May be appropriate where the window itself remains in good condition and the problem relates to a serviceable component, seal or operating issue.
Replacement
May make more sense where the window is considerably older and draughts are one of several problems involving glazing, timber, seals or mechanisms.
AR Windows provides specialist VELUX window repairs and VELUX maintenance, so the aim is to identify the appropriate solution rather than automatically replacing the entire window.
When is replacement worth considering?
A whistle by itself is rarely a reason to assume an entire roof window needs replacing. The overall condition of the window matters much more.
Replacement becomes more relevant if the window also has:
- failed or misted glazing
- persistent cold draughts
- deteriorating timber
- repeated water ingress
- worn operating components
- damaged seals
- several age-related faults
In that situation, investing in a modern replacement VELUX window may offer better long-term value than continuing to repair individual ageing components.
Can servicing help prevent draughts and operating problems?
Regular maintenance provides an opportunity to check the condition and operation of the roof window before minor changes become larger problems.
It cannot prevent every component from ageing, but a window that is inspected and maintained is more likely to have developing issues identified earlier.
AR Windows provides one-off VELUX maintenance as well as planned care through our Annual Service Contract.
What information should you send AR Windows?
If your roof window is whistling, a little information can help us understand what may be happening before a visit is arranged.
If possible, send us:
- a photograph of the complete VELUX window
- a photograph of the VELUX product code
- the approximate age of the window if known
- where you believe the noise is coming from
- whether you can also feel a draught
- whether the window opens and closes normally
- whether the whistle only occurs in strong winds
- details of any leaks, condensation or other faults
A short video or audio recording of the noise may also be useful if it can be made safely.
VELUX window whistling when it's windy?
Send AR Windows the product code, photographs and a description of when the noise occurs. We can help determine whether the window needs maintenance, repair or further investigation.
Final thoughts
A whistling VELUX window is usually the sound of air moving through a narrow opening, but finding that opening is the important part. It could relate to normal ventilation under particular wind conditions, or it could point towards worn seals, poor closing, an operating issue or another part of the installation.
If the noise is new, persistent or accompanied by a noticeable draught, do not simply cover gaps with sealant. Identifying the cause first gives you a much better chance of fixing the actual problem rather than masking one of its symptoms.
Whistling VELUX window FAQs
Why does my VELUX window whistle when it's windy?
Whistling usually occurs when moving air passes through a relatively narrow opening. Around a VELUX window this could involve ventilation, seals, the way the sash is closing or another part of the installation.
Does a whistling VELUX window mean the seals have failed?
Not necessarily. Worn or damaged seals are one possible cause, but ventilation, window alignment, closing pressure and the wider installation can also affect airflow.
Is it normal to feel air from a VELUX window?
VELUX roof windows may incorporate ventilation features, so some controlled airflow can be normal. A strong new draught around a fully closed window is different and may justify further investigation.
Can I seal a draughty VELUX window with silicone?
Applying silicone without identifying the source is not recommended as a general solution. The airflow could be related to a component, ventilation feature or installation issue that requires a different repair.
Can AR Windows repair a draughty or whistling VELUX window?
AR Windows provides VELUX maintenance and repair services. Whether a particular window can be repaired depends on the cause of the airflow, its age, condition and availability of suitable components.
Find the cause before deciding how to fix it.
AR Windows can assess VELUX roof window problems and advise whether maintenance, repair or replacement is the appropriate solution.
